The UK Graduate Route visa (also known as the Post-Study Work Visa) is one of the most valuable benefits of studying in the UK. It allows international graduates to remain in the UK for 2 years (or 3 years for doctoral graduates) to work or look for work after completing their degree.
What Is the Graduate Route Visa?
Launched in July 2021, the Graduate Route is an unsponsored work visa. This means you don't need a job offer before applying — you can arrive, look for work, and take any job (including multiple part-time jobs). There's no minimum salary requirement, and you can switch to a Skilled Worker Visa once you find a qualifying role.
Who Is Eligible?
To apply for the Graduate Route, you must have completed a bachelor's, master's, or PhD degree at a UK university with a valid Track Record of Compliance (UKVI-approved). You must apply from inside the UK before your Student Visa expires. The qualification must be from a recognized UK higher education institution.
How to Apply
Apply online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal at least 3 months before your Student Visa expires. You'll need your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), passport, university completion letter, and proof of English proficiency. The application fee is £700, and decisions typically arrive within 8 weeks.
What Can You Do on the Graduate Route?
On this visa, you can work in almost any job — including self-employment and freelancing. You can work full-time with no minimum salary requirement. This gives you time to gain UK work experience, build your network, and find a sponsored position. Many Pakistani graduates use this visa to secure Skilled Worker Visa sponsorship from UK employers.
Pathway to Skilled Worker Visa
Once you've found a job that qualifies (minimum salary threshold applies), you can switch from the Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker Visa without leaving the UK. This is the most common pathway Pakistani students use to begin a long-term career in the UK. With 5 years of continuous residence, you may then be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
